The Central Arkansas Horticultural Society is an group of garden enthusiasts who meet monthly from March through October on the last Tuesday of each month, usually in someone's garden. Members get to tour the garden, ask questions, exchange ideas, enjoy refreshments, and have a social hour.
Garden Visits In addition to the informal monthly garden meetings, the Society occasionally adds a "bonus garden" or two during the prime growing season, usually on a Sunday afternoon to showcase another garden. There is a "plant swap meeting" usually held in August, where members can bring surplus plants and swap them for plants they do not have and learn about them from the previous owner.
Education The March meeting consists of an informative program, garden related, held at Wildwood Park for the Arts, where the Society has made support contributions for garden construction by funding projects with dues income.
Membership Garden enthusiasts may visit a meeting as a guest of any member to consider joining the group. Membership applications are available by clicking on the "Application to Join the Society."
A Brief History
On Feb. 10, 1988, the following individuals convened at 337 Charles St., Little Rock, AR., and established the CAHS. Pat White, Rex Wilkins, P. Allen Smith, Shelly Angel, Al Bruno, and Tom Dillard.
The members agreed that ornamental plant experimentation should have a high priority. Information sharing also ranked high. At first, meetings were quarterly and dues were $10.00. But then, it was suggested and agreed that during the summer months when the gardens are most beautiful, the Society ought to have monthly meetings. Members were encouraged to open share their gardens with other members of the society.
When CAHS was first established there was a newsletter with informative gardening articles and news. Tom Dillard was editor and chief contributor of the newsletter. Tom has since moved to northwest Arkansas. CAHS is now a non-profit corporation registered in Arkansas.
CAHS now has over one hundred twenty members
