Final 2010 Meeting added Flavor

Held at Audubon Arkansas, Mary Smith, the Director of Education, gave a tour and a short presentation on the unique plants found on the grounds.  Sharon Priest and Jo Leggett presented the 2010 Grant Project, a heating system for the greenhouse at the Dunbar Middle School. The proposal passed by a unanimous vote.

Mike Abele, Treasurer, handed out printed summaries of the Society's financial position and officers were elected for 2011.  Vice-chairman, Clarence Cash moved up to Chairman and Mike Abele was re-elected Treasurer. And Angela Best, Secretary.  Walter Walker, our drink chairman, was elected to the Board joining existing board member, Ron Workman
Our regular plant swap seemed to be a big success with an interesting variety of plants both offered and accepted. The food co-chairs,
Bonnie Bradford and Marcella Grimmitt solicited a delicious spread contributing members.

September Garden was a WOW !

The garden of Nan Alwine, created by her son David, exceeded all expectations.  The central water feature was as picturesque as it was large.
Filled with unusual plants, the "Garden of Eden" was an inspiration to all of the attendees.                  ______________

August Garden of Charlotte Perdue was Special

You would never know from looking at Charlotte's healthy garden that we had a near record heat wave and drought for over thirty days.  Her back yard is all garden, tastefully arranged, and as interesting as a well executed art painting.
More amazing was the prolific blooms in a virtual shade garden.  The air was full of questions about her collection of unusual plants which drew much attention from the large crowd.

New CAHS Website is
Now One Year Old

The 2010 website, a gift from Michael and Sue Fess, gave the Society membership current news, membership, and provided easy reference to By-laws, officers, and committee personnel.
The 2011 edition will have a passwords for "Members Only" section and has been funded in its entirety by the donors.

June Bonus Garden Warm but Friendly

The spacious garden of Michael and Sue Fess brought out a record number of guests on a warm afternoon.  Marcella Grimmitt had two visitors from Pennsylvania and Theresa Blair brought her architect husband, Frank.

Walter Walker served wine to several other guests including the Tom Rigneys, Thomas and Bobbye Dennis and educator Joyce Stroud.  Boardmember, Ron Workman helped out at the greeter table until Jackie Walker returned from a meeting downtown.

Lou Sanders seemed pleased with the plants he contributed to the garden as he and Kathy enjoyed the food table prepared by Bonnie Bradford.   Vice-Chairman, Clarence Cash, was appropriately dressed in a t-shirt and baseball cap while Chairman, Michael Fess wore shorts.
Hydrangeas were in full color in several areas and two unusual beds of impatients re-seeded themselves for the second year.  Several varieties of Hosta and ferns also atracted attention.  The unique water features, damaged in January's ice storm, were back making the pleasant noises of running water.  The garden sculpture also attracted much attention from many first-time viewers.

May Garden Best
Rain-out We Ever Had

Our May Garden visit to the garden of Susan Hurst was a fun event in the rain. Susan said, "You people really know how to party."
The multiple terraces and intricate garden paths made for a most creative
Scene in a spectacular shade garden.
Food for at least eighty people was enjoyed by about forty.  Hardy gardeners toured the beautiful Hurst garden with an umbrella in one hand and a glass of wine in the other.

Walter Walker poured wine with one hand while holding an umbrella in the other.  Jackie Walker braved the damp while handing out badges.

Marcella Grimmitt and Bonnie Bradford had to move the food table inside as our host allowed us to invade her home.

June Garden of John and Sally Naill was Special

John and Sally's small garden is centered around the back patio, where the couple enjoys the morning and evening watching the ever changing greenery. They moved here nine years ago, bringing with them many "family" plants from their previous residences.
Sally's goal is to have more perennials and to build up the existing thin soil. Thin soil or not, the garden is "neat as a pin." The couple at 2423 Shenandoah Valley Drive always enjoys the visits to the "garden" by family and friends."
Sally deferred to husband, John, for a quick history of the process who showed a scrapbook of before and after.  She said, "He talks louder."
.   New members,
Barton & Carol Corley enjoyed meeting many of the attendees.

April Garden Great Fun

The first garden visit of the year was a hit with about sixty-five attendees.  Joy Wheeler, an artist and gardener, led tours of her lovely country garden showing mostly propagated planting.
Joy's husband, Frank, brings in the compost and mulch and Joy does the rest.  Most of her garden consists of plants she propagated or grew from seed.

Marcela Grimmett showed her dependability by recruiting finger food and dips in her first effort for the year.  Ann Cooper and Bonnie Bradford pitched in to help Mike Abele with the new name badges.
